BBC Concerts (1950-1951)
Description
A collection of 17 programmes form concerts organised by the BBC, from 1950 to 1951. Some programmes contain analytical programme notes, which occasionally use musical examples.

All of the programmes are from concerts given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The majority of programmes are from the Royal Albert Hall, which were largely “BBC Symphony Concerts”: the remainder include concerts organised by the Royal Philharmonic Society. The collection also contains five programmes from the “Festival of Britain” in 1951, which are split between Royal Albert Hall (2) and Royal Festival Hall (3). Groups which occasionally joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra in performances include the BBC Chorus, BBC Choral Society and BBC Women’s Chorus.

The programmes are arranged by concert series/organising body – BBCSO, RPS Concerts, Festival of Britain – then chronologically.

Collections Overview
The Centre for Performance History was created in 2004 through the amalgamation of the Department of Portraits and the Museum of Instruments (see the separate entry for the Museum. The College has acquired portraits throughout its history since 1883 and the Centre posseses the most comprehensive collection of portraits of musicians in the UK, amounting to some 346 original portraits and 10,000 prints and photographs. In addition to the iconographical collections and their documentation, the department houses other categories of source material - most notably the largest collection of concert programmes in this country, comprising some 600,000 items dating from 1780 to the present day.
