Description
A collection of six magazine files of programmes, from the collection of Mosco Carner from 1938 to 1987. Mosco Carner (1904-1985) was based in Great Britain from 1933 to the end of his life. Though he was known chiefly as a music critic and writer on music, he was also a conductor.
Half of the collection contains programmes which feature programme notes written by Mosco Carner. These programmes date from 1949 to 1983. The majority of programme notes are analytical notes, not usually including musical examples. Occasionally, the programmes contain short essays pertaining to the musicological significance and background of the works being performed, as well as an analysis of the music itself. Some programmes notes include annotations.
The majority of these programmes are from concerts given in Britain, chiefly from London. The Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall (from its inception in 1967 onwards) are the most prominent London venues included in the collection. Carner wrote for an array of concerts and concert-types: the majority of Carner’s notes in this collection are from orchestral concerts, with a significant amount from piano recitals. Though the programmes cover a number of different ensembles and orchestras, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and New Philharmonia (later the Philharmonia) are particularly heavily represented. In addition, there are a number of programmes from Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, as well as Edinburgh Festival programmes, which contain notes by Carner.
There are other programmes in the collection, where Carner has no written the programme notes. These date from 1947 to 1983. In addition, there is a Royal Opera House programme from a performance of Turandot on 19th May 1987: this was performance was dedicated to the memory of Carner, and contains his biography.
The venues represented in the programme collection are as follows, which includes both programme where Carner wrote the programme notes, and ones where he did not: Royal Albert Hall; Wigmore Hall; Royal Festival Hall; Gosforth Communal Hall, Newcastle; Adolph Tuck Hall; Usher Hall, Edinburgh; Brangwyn Hall, Swansea; Fairfield Hall, Croydon; Victoria and Albert Museum; Town Hall, Huddersfield; Free Trade Hall, Manchester; Assembly Hall, Royal Tunbridge Wells; Queen Elizabeth Hall; Town Hall, Portstewart [Northern Island]; Regal Cinema, Cambridge; Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre; Congress Theatre, Eastbourne; Purcell Room; Town Hall, Birmingham; Barbican Centre; Crystal Palace; Westminster Cathedral. In addition, there are programmes from the Cheltenham Festival and English Bach Festivals, which took place at various venues within Cheltenham and Oxford/London respectively. There is also part of a programme from a charity concert organised by the Vienna State Opera in 1947, where the venue for the concert is not certain.
There are also 13 programmes from concerts where Carner was a performer; in all but one a conductor, and the other an accompanist. These programmes date from 1938 to 1944, and are from the following venues: Cambridge Theatre; Central Hall, Coventry; Orpheum, Golders Green; Guildhall, Winchester; Corn Exchange, Bedford; Colston Hall, Bristol; Aeolian Hall [London]. Carner did not write the programme notes to these concerts.
Arrangement:
The programmes are divided into three sub-collections: programmes where Carner wrote the programme notes: programmes with Mosco Carner programme notes, including a separate sequence for programmes where Carner is the probable author; programmes without Mosco Carner programme notes, and no other obvious connection to the author; programmes where Carner was performing. Each of these three groups are organised chronologically. Undated material is at the end of its respective group. In addition, miscellaneous items including unidentifiable torsos of programmes, are kept as a separate sequence at the end of the “Carner - programme notes” boxes. The Royal Opera House tribute performance programme is included at the end of the “Carner – performer” sequence.
