Description
Programme and wordbooks for the first and sixth Ballad Concerts of the 1899-90 season, given 1 November 1899 and 7 February 1900 at St James’s Hall, directed by William Boosey.
Both were predominantly vocal concerts, with occasional orchestral repertory performed by the Ivan Caryll Orchestra.
Both programmes provide detailed information regarding the performers (including a list of the orchestral ensemble) and carry an advertisement for the next performance in the series.
1 November:
Vocalists: Misses Hilda and Miss Muriel Foster, Mr Ben Davies, Mlle Leclerc, Mr Kennerley Rumford, Mme Alice Gomez, Mrs Beerbohm Tree and Mr Maurice Farkoa.
The orchestral component of this concert included the first English performance of Massenet, Parade Militire. The programme carries a single handwritten annotation indicating a work which was encored.
7 February
Vocalists: Miss Hortense Paulsen, Mr Watkin Mills, Miss Marie Tempest, Madame Alice Gomez, Mr Ley Vernon and Miss Hilda Foster.
The instrumental portion of this concert included the first performance of Paul Lacome, Suite d’Orchestre and also included solo piano piece played by Mlle Chaminade.
