Description
Prospectus and complete set of programmes, with words, for the first two seasons of the British Chamber Music Concerts, given in 1894 and 1895 at the Queen’s (Small) Hall, Langham Place, under the direction of Ernest Fowles.

These were vocal and instrumental concerts dedicated to the cultivation of British chamber music. Particularly in the second season, they included a number of first performances.

First season:
29 October, 13 and 27 November, and 11 December 1894.

The prospectus for this season includes an ‘Introduction’ which outlines the intentions of the series. Also, a list of the subscribers.

The programmes provide detailed information regarding the performers. In addition to those listed below, all concerts featured Ernest Fowles (piano) and were accompanied, in alternation, by Alfred Izard (first and third) and Henry Bird.

29 October: Messrs Jasper and Wallace Sutcliffe (violins), Alfred Hobday (viola) and W. H. Squire (cello), with Miss Hilda Wilson (vocal) and Miss Agnes Zimmermann (piano).

13 November: Miss Emily Shinner (violin), Mr Leonard Fowles (viola), and Mr Whitehouse (cello), with Mrs Mary Davies (vocal), and Mr Ernest Kiver and Mr Bernard Fowles (piano).

27 November: Messrs Jasper and Wallace Sutcliffe (violins), Alfred Hobday (viola), and W. H. Squire (cello), with Arthur Thompson (vocal) and Madame Frickenhaus (piano).

11 December: Miss Emily Shinner and Mr Wallace Sutcliffe (violins), Leonard Fowles (viola) and Charles Ould (cello), with Mr Norman Salmond (vocal), and Natalia Janotha and Ernest Fowles (piano).

Second season:
8 and 22 November and 6 and 20 December 1895.

The first three concerts of this season were accompanied by Henry Bird. The last was accompanied by Mr Waddington Cooke. Each concert of the season included at least one first performance.

8 November: Emile Sauret (violin), Leonard Fowles (viola) and Charles Ould (cello), with Mrs Hutchinson (vocal). The first performance of certain movements from A. C. Mackenzie, ‘In the North’ (pieces for violin and piano).

22 November: Ernest Hopkinson (violin), Charles Draper (clarinet), Arthur Thompson (vocal) and Miss Sybil Palliser (piano). The first performance of Stewart Macpherson, Romance in D for violin.

6 December: Emile Sauret (violin), Charles Ould (cello), Isabel Fassett (vocal) and Agnes Zimmermann (piano). The first London performance of C. Hubert H. Parry, Sonata in A for Piano (no. 2) and first public performance of Rosalind F. Ellicott, Trio in D minor for Pianoforte, Violin and Violoncello.

20 December: E. Hopkinson and Alfred Wall (violins), Leonard Fowles (viola) and Charles Ould (cello), with Mr Herbert Thorndike (vocal). This concert included the first performances of the following works: G. W. S. Marshall Hall, String quartet in C major; Alfred Wall, Sonata in A minor for Pianoforte and Violin; and B. Luard Selby, Piano Quintet in A.
