Description
A collection comprising the prospectus, programmes and wordbooks for the three morning and three evening concerts given between 8 and 11 October 1828 as part of the Bury Saint Edmund's Grand Classical Festival, held as a single bound volume with MS notes by Sir George Smart.
The morning performances were given on 9, 10 and 11 October 1828 at St. Mary's Church, Bury Saint Edmund's and consisted of selections of sacred music. That on 9 October comprised Handel, The Messiah. Those on 10 and 11 October were three-act miscellaneous concerts, including music by Handel and Haydn.
The evening concerts were given on 8, 9 and 10 October 1828 at The Theatre. These were two-act miscellaneous performances, with music 'selected from the works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Cherubini, Weber, Callcott, Webbe, Horsley, Bishop and other eminent composers'. The programmes were largely vocal but included orchestral overtures/symphonies at the beginning of each act and occasional instrumental repertory.
The prospectus and programmes contain detailed information regarding both the vocal and instrumental soloists (see below) and the orchestral players, led by Franz Cramer and conducted by Sir George Smart. The prospectus also carries information about the organizational structure of the Festival, including the names of the patrons, President and vice President.
Vocal: Madame Caradori Allan, Miss Marian Cramer and Miss Paton; Mr. Braham, Mr Terrail, Mr Horncastle, Mr E. Taylor and Mr. Phillips.
All programmes contain annotations in Smart's hand. These provide information on the following areas: timings (of the complete performance and of individual sections/pieces); encores performed; changes to the printed programme; rehearsal provision; accompaniments to the vocal pieces (orchestral or keyboard); and the exact division of the vocal forces.
The volume also includes a sample letter of engagement from Sir George Smart (printed).
