Description
A bound volume containing the programme books, with words and Analytical Remarks, for 15 concerts given during the first and second seasons of the Monday 'Pops', held at St. James's Hall, London on 21 and 28 February, 7/9 March, 4 and 25 April and 16 May 1859 (first season) and 14 and 21 November and 5 and 12 December 1859 and 16 January, 13 and 27 February, 26 March and 18 June 1860 (second season).
With the exception of the concerts on 25 April and 16 May 1859 (conducted by Lindsay Sloper), these performances were directed by Mr Benedict.
All programmes carry an introductory note regarding the concert organization, and those for 12 December 1859 and from 27 February 1960 incorporate musical examples.
These were concerts of vocal and instrumental chamber music, typically with a central theme. During the first season, each concert was restricted to music by one or two composers whilst during the second, either the vocal or the instrumental repertory was all selected from the work of the same composer.
