Collection Title
Concerts of Ancient Music (1782-1809)
Unique Identifier
54.b.1-17
Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for the Concerts of Ancient Music given during the seasons 1782, 1784–88, 1790, 1792-96, 1798-1803 and 1809, held as a sequence of bound volumes (see below).
Twelve performances were given each year. Very few of the programmes cite a concert venue but it is known from other sources that the performances took place at the New Rooms, Tottenham Street (1782-94) and at the Concert Room of the King’s Theatre (from 1795).
All wordbooks provide the names of the vocal soloists. Certain volumes include the names of the Directors and Subscribers to these concerts.
The volumes for 1798, 1799, 1801, 1802 and 1803 also include programmes and wordbooks for the annual performance of Messiah given by the Royal Society of Musicians on 4 May 1798, 29 May 1799, 13 May 1801, 12 May 1802 and 11 May 1803, in the Great Concert Room of the King’s Theatre. All of these documents include lists of the subscribers to the Royal Society of Musicians.
