Description
Programmes and wordbooks for eleven operatic concerts given at the Royal Albert Hall, London, between July 1871 and June 1879. These programmes are bound chronologically, but are listed below by institution/organization.

These were two-part concerts consisting predominantly of operatic excerpts, with orchestral overtures at the beginning of each part.

All programmes include both the words and music (vocal line) for many of the pieces performed. They also provide the names of all the soloists.


1. Society of Arts Concerts
Programmes and wordbooks for two concerts given for the benefit of the National Training School for Music. Both were conducted by Sir Michael Costa and featured the violinist Signor Sivori.

In addition to the vocal and orchestral pieces, these concerts included two instrumental solos. A number of these were based on operatic melodies.

5 July 1871: third concert of the season, with vocalists Signor Foli and Herr Jacob Müller, Madame Lemmens-Sherringtion and Madame Trebelli-Bettini, and Mademoiselle Titiens.

26 July 1871: sixth and last concert of the season, with vocalists Signor Agnesi, Signor Mendioroz, and Signor Prudenza, Mr W. T. Best, and Mademoiselle Natalie Carola and Mademoiselle Titiens.


2. Her Majesty’s Opera Company
15 July 1871: Wordbook for a Grand Concert, conducted by Monsieur Sainton, with the vocalists Signor Agnesi, Signor Bignio, Signor Fancelli, Signor Foli, Signor Mendioroz, and Signor Vizzani; Monsieur Capoul and Mr Bentham; Madame Alboni, and Mademoiselle Fernandez, Mademoiselle Ilma de Murska, Mademoiselle Sinico, Mademoiselle Titiens, and Mademoiselle Trebelli-Bettini. Also, choruses/ensembles performed by the Chorus of Her Majesty’s Opera

5 August 1871: Programme and wordbook for a Grand Concert, conducted by Sainton with Mr Willing (organ), including F. H. Cowen, Grand March ‘Maid of Orleans’, conducted by the composer. The programme lists the following vocal performers: Signor Agnesi, Signor Caravoglia, Signor Dodoni, Signor Fancelli, Signor Foli, Signor Mendioroz, Signor Vizzani, Signor Zoboli and Mr Bentham; Madame Alboni and Madame Sinico; Mademoiselle Fernandez, Mademoiselle Titiens, and Mademoiselle Leon-Duval.

8 June 1872: Wordbook for the Third Grand Morning Concert, conducted by Mr W. G. Cusins with Mr Willing (organ). The programme lists the following vocal soloists: Signor Agnesi, Signor Borella, Signor Campanini, Signor Fancelli, Signor Foli, Signor Mendioroz and Signor Vizzani; Madame Alboni; Mademoiselle Carlotta Grossi, Mademoiselle Clara-Louise Kellogg, Mademoiselle Marie Roze, Mademoiselle Marie Marimon, and Mademoiselle Titiens.

6 and 20 June 1874: Wordbooks for the First and Second Grand Opera Concerts of the season. Both performances were conducted by Mr W. G. Cusins, with Mr Willing (organ). They featured the following vocal performers: Signor Agnesi, Signor Borella, Signor Fancelli, Signor Galassi and Herr Behrens; Madame Trebelli-Bettini, Mademoiselle Justine Macvitz, and Mademoiselle Alwina Valleria. Additonal vocal soloists are listed below.

6 June: Signor de Reschi, Signor Giulio Perkins, Signor Urio, and Mr Bentham; Mademoiselle Risarelli, Mademoiselle Louise Singelli and Mademoiselle Titiens.

20 June: Signor Gillandi and Signor Rota; Madame Christine Nilsson; and Mademoiselle Marie Roze and Mademoiselle Louise Singelli.

4 June 1879: Wordbook for the First Grand Morning Concert, conducted by Sir Julius Benedict. This was an entirely vocal concert, with choruses replacing the orchestral overtures. The programme lists the following vocal soloists: Signor Brignoli, Signor Fancelli, Signor Foli, Signor del Puente, Signor Susini, Monsieur Candidus, Monsieur Carleton and Monsieur Roudil; Madame Helene Crosmond, Madame Etelka Gerster, Madame Pisani, and Madame Trebelli; Mademoiselle Emilie Ambre, Mademoiselle Minnie Hauk, and Mademoiselle Marie Vanzandt.

3. Miscellaneous concerts
27 February 1872: Programme and wordbook for a Grand Evening Concert on Thanksgiving Day, conducted by Sir Juluis Benedict with Mr G. Carter (organ). The concert included the first performance of Benedict, Hymn of Thanksgiving and two violin solos performed by Joseph Joachim.The programme lists the following vocal soloists: Mr Cummings, Mr Maybrick, and Mr Sims Reeves; Mademoiselle Enriquez and Mademoiselle J. Sherrington; and Madame Lemmens Sherrington.

14 July 1875: Wordbook for Madame Nilsson’s Grand Evening Concert, conducted by Signor Le Calsi and Mr F. H. Cowen. This is a purely vocal concert, with choruses replacing the orchestral overtures. The programme lists the following vocal soloists: Signor Campanini, Signor de Reschi, Signor Foli, Herr Behrens, and Mr Sims Reeves; Madame Christine Nilsson, Madame Trebelli-Bettini, Mademoiselle Anna de Belocca, and Mademoiselle Titiens.

22 January 1876: Wordbook for a Grand Evening Concert, conducted by Mr J. Barnby and F. H. Cowen, with Mr Willing (organ). Although this concert does not include any orchestral overtures, there is a cello solo by Monsieur Jules de Swert. There are also a number of choruses and part songs performed by the Royal Albert Hall Choral Society. The programme lists the following vocal soloists: Signor del Puente, Signor Paladini, Herr Behrens, and Mr Edward Lloyd; Madame Marie Roze, Madame Trebelli, and Mademoiselle Risarelli.
