Description
Analytical programmes with words for four concerts given by Donald Francis Tovey at St James Hall on 1, 8, 15 and 22 November 1900, featuring Tovey as both a performer and a composer. Each programme is accompanied by an ‘Analytical Essay’, which include extensive historical and analytical notes, with numerous musical examples.
1 November: a programme of small-ensemble vocal and instrumental music by Handel, Mozart, Chopin, Brahms and Tovey, given by Tovey (piano) with C. Draper (clarinet), A. Borsdorf (horn), W. Malsch (oboe), E. F. James (bassoon), and Marie Fillunger (vocal).
8 November: a programme of piano music by Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Weber, with songs by Schubert and Beethoven, given by Tovey (piano) and Fillunger (vocal).
This programme includes certain addenda and corrigenda to the notes given in relation to the first performance of the series.
15 November: a programme including piano quintets by Robert Schumann and Tovey and Bach, Cantata No. 51, performed by Tovey (piano) and the Kruse String Quartet of J. Kruse and C Schilsky (violin), A. E. Ferir (viola) and H. Walenn. Also, Mr Walter Morrow (trumpet).
22 November: a programme of piano music by Beethoven, Chopin and Tovey, a violin piece by Mozart and vocal works by J. S. Bach, given by Tovey (piano), Miss Maud MacCarthy (violin), Mr. Malsch (oboe), Miss Fillunger (vocal).
