Description
A collection comprising the prospectus, programmes and wordbooks for three morning and three evening performances given at the Theatre Royal, Dublin between 30 August and 3 September 1831 as the First Dublin Grand Musical Festival, held as a single bound volume with MS notes by Sir George Smart.
The morning concerts were given on 31 August and 1 and 2 September 1831 and were three-act performances of sacred music, including the following works.
31 August 1831: Ferdinand Ries, The Triumph of Faith (first performance in the United Kingdom).
1 September 1831: Handel, The Messiah.
2 September 1831: Haydn, Spohr and Handel.
The evening concerts were given on 30 August and 1 and 3 September and were two-part miscellaneous performances, consisting principally of vocal repertory, with orchestral overtures/symphonies at the start of each act and occasional concerto/concertante pieces. The concert on 30 August included a new symphony, composed and conducted by Ferdinand Ries.
The prospectus and programmes provide detailed information regarding both the vocal and instrumental soloists (see below) and the orchestral and choral ensembles, led by Messrs Franz Cramer, Loder and Mori and conducted by Sir George Smart.
Vocal: Madame Stockhausen, Mrs Atkinson (late Miss Goodall), Miss Ashe, and Mrs. W. Knyvett; Mr Braham, Mr W. Knyvett, Mr John Barton, Mr Machin, Mr. E Taylor, Mr Bedford and Mr H. Phillips; also Signor DeBegnis for the concerts.
Instrumental: Paganini (violin).
All programmes carry annotations in Smart's hand. These provide information on the alterations to the printed programmes, on the exact utilization of the vocal forces and on the arrangements for accompanying vocal pieces (orchestral or keyboard). They also record the timings for the performances (complete and for individual sections/pieces) and comment on the encores requested and performed.
In addition to the concert programmes, this volume contains two examples of printed correspondence used by Smart in engaging players and a printed bill with the regulations of the festival.
