Collection Title
Federation of British Music Industries (1927-30)
Unique Identifier
7897.w.35.
Description
A collection of prospectuses for the sixth, eighth and ninth Summer Courses in Music Teaching, held in Oxford from 5-19 August 1927, 1-15 August 1929 and 31 July-14 August 1930.
All events were presided over by Hugh P. Allen (Heather Professor of Music). Documentation for the eighth and ninth festivals also cites J.T. Bavin as a Director.
The events were given under the auspices of the Federation of British Music Industries, the British Music Society and the British Federation of Musical Competition Festivals. The Incorporated Society of Musicians and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes are listed as additional sponsors of the eighth and ninth courses.
All documents include a detailed timetable for the courses, which included a series of lectures in the Holywell Music Rooms, Hymn/Congregational Singing in the Sheldonian Theatre, and Organ Recitals and Choral Services in the Cathedral. Although there are no actual concert programmes, the prospectuses for the eighth and ninth seasons do include a list of the music required for the course (to be used in lectures and practical classes).
All documents include information regarding the practical arrangements for the events, as well as biographical details regarding those involved. There is also a brief introduction, outlining the purposes of the event, namely to ‘assist those who desire to bring more music into the life of the Community’.
