Description
A folder of material relating to the Festival of India, held in Britain between 22 March and 14 November 1982, including three handbills and three copies of the programme booklet for the Inaugural Concert, given on 22 March 1982 at the Royal Festival Hall, London.
This was a two-part performance, including vocal music from South India (given by M.S. Subbulakshmi) and the European premiere of Raga-Mala, Concerto No. 2 for Sitar and Orchestra, given by Ravi Shankar and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, led by David Nolan and conducted by Zubin Mehta.
The programme includes historical and descriptive notes and carries biographical information (with photographs) on the principal performers. There is also a complete list of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a biographical note on the ensemble.
Also held are three copies of the programme book for the Festival Finale, given on 14 November 1982 at the London Coliseum. This was a performance of folk dances, with one vocal and one instrumental item. There are brief notes on each of the pieces performed and biographical information (with photographs) on the principal performers.
The remaining material consists of the following:

'The Festival of India … includes major events and exhibitions planned by Official committees in Britain and India, a series of Associated events, co-ordinated by the Committee of Indian Associations and Artists resident in the UK, an Educational programme, and many other events and exhibitions presented by British stores, galleries, theatres and other organizations who have wished to participate in the largest Indian Festival held in Britain since India’s Independence'.
