Description
A collection comprising the prospectus, programmes and wordbooks for three morning and three evening performances given between 14 and 17 June 1814 as the Bristol Grand Musical Festival, held in a single bound volume, with MS notes by Sir George Smart. Also included is a programme for a Grand Concert given at the Kingston-Rooms, Bath on 24 September 1819.
The morning performances were given on 14, 16 and 17 June 1814 at St. Paul's Church. That on 16 June consisted of Handel, The Messiah. The remainder were in two acts and combined selections from Haydn, The Creation (14 June) and Beethoven, The Mount of Olives (17 June) with a 'grand selection' from the music of Handel, Haydn and Mozart.
The evening performances were given on 14, 15 and 16 June 1814 at the Theatre Royal, Bristol. These were two-act miscellaneous concerts, consisting principally of solo and ensemble vocal music, with orchestral overtures/symphonies at the beginning of each act and with occasional solo instrumental pieces.
There are a number of works described as either composed specifically for the concerts or as receiving their first performances in Bristol. In the latter category are Beethoven, The Mount of Olives and a symphony by the same composer.
The programmes contain very occasional annotations in Smart's hand which detail minor chances to the printed programmes.
The prospectus and programmes provide detailed information regarding both the vocal and instrumental soloists (see below) and include a list of the orchestral ensemble, led by Mr Loder and conducted by Sir George Smart. These documents also provide full listings of those involved in the organization of the festival, including the President, Patrons and Directors.
Vocal: Madame Catalani, Miss Nash, Master G. Stansbury and Mrs. Salmon; Mr Braham, Mr Magrath, Mr Garbett, Mr Hodges, Mr Lacy and Signor Naldi.
The volume concludes with a programme for a Grand Concert given at The Kingston-Rooms, Bath on 24 September 1819. This was a two-part performance, made up principally of solo and ensemble vocal music, with an overture by Mozart and Mehul at the beginning of each act and a 'Rondo Brillant for the Grand Piano Forte' by Hummel, played by Henry Field. The programme lists the vocal and instrumental soloists, including Mr Loder ('Violino Obligato'). There are a number of annotations in Smart's hand concerning the timings of the performance and the works receiving encores.
