Description
Programme Book for the fortieth Haslemere Festival, given between 16 and 25 June 1964, directed by Carl Dolmetsch and sponsored by the Dolmetsch Foundation in association with the Arts Council of Great Britain and Haslemere Urban District Council.
In addition to the concert programmes cited below, this volume includes historical essays on the following subjects (authors in brackets):
The First 20 Years: 1925-45 (Chalmers Burns)
Shakespeare and Dancing (Nathalie Dolmetsch)
Children’s Concerts (Reginald Johnson)
Shakespeare and Music (Frank Owen)
The Haslemere Educational Museum (Arthur Jewell)
There are shorter statements concerning the Lute Society, the Viola da Gamba Society and the Haslemere Musical Society (conducted by David Stone) and detailed documentation regarding the Dolmetsch Foundation and its members. Also, biographical notes on the featured artists, ‘Notes on some of the Instruments used in the Haslemere Festival’, and photographs of Arnold and Carl Dolmetsch and of previous festivals.
All programmes provide a list of the performers engaged, included among whom were Carl, Jeanne, Cecile, Marguerite and Nathalie Dolmetsch.
With the exception of those for the two Shakespeare concerts, all programmes carry brief historical and descriptive notes on the works performed.
16 July: Children’s Concerts, music for viols, recorders and keyboards, given by Jeanne, Cecile, Marguerite and Nathalie Dolmetsch and Joseph Saxby, with a commentary by Carl Dolmetsch.
17 July: Reception Concert, commemorating composers whose centenaries fall in 1964, including music by Hans Leo Hassler, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Johann Mattheson, Jean-Marie Leclair and Pietro Locatelli.
18 July: Second Concert, Italian Masters (Sammartini, Frescobaldi, Trabaci, A. and D. Scarlatti, Vitalli, Corelli and Giovanni Gabrieli).
20 July: Music and Instruments from Shakespeare’s Plays.
21 July: Dances from Shakespeare’s Plays. This was a programme devised by, and including a commentary from, Nathalie Dolmetsch.
22 July: Fourth Concert, Bach, Breval and Telemann, with Elizabeth Harwood, Grayston Burgess, Philip Todd and John Barrow (vocal) and a chorus drawn from the members of the Haslemere Musical Society, conducted by Dr Chalmers Burns.
23 July: Fifth Concerts, 16th and 17th Century English Music/Music of Bach, Handel and Telemann.
24 July: Sixth Concert, Varied Music of the 16th and 17th Centuries/Varied Music of the 18th Centuries.
25 July: Final Concert, Bach and Telemann.
