Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for three concerts given between 18 and 19 September 1900 at the Hovingham Hall, North Yorkshire as part of the Tenth Musical Festival, held with a Souvenir programme (with wordbook) for a concert given at the Bath Saloons, Torquay on 26 January 1901.
1. Hovingham Music Festival
All programmes include detailed information regarding the vocal and instrumental soloists (see below) and provide a complete list of the orchestral performers, led by Mr J.W. Rendle and conducted by Canon Pemberton.
Vocal: Miss Agnes Nicholls, Mrs Burrell, Mr Gregory Hast and Mr Andrew Black.
Instrumental: Dr Joachim and Herr J. Kruse (violin), Herr Carl Fuchs (cello), Mr Vivian (flute), Mr E.W. Davies (oboe), Mr Salomon (trumpet) and Miss Fanny Davies (piano).
18 September 1900 (afternoon): Beethoven, Mass in C and Mozart, Violin Concerto in A, with miscellaneous piano solos and songs.
18 September 1900 (evening): Mendelssohn, Walpurgisnacht, Mozart, Symphony in G minor, Brahms, Song of Destiny, Beethoven, Piano Concerto No.4 and Bach, Concerto in F.
19 September 1900 (afternoon): Arthur Goring Thomas, ‘The Swan and the Skylark’, Beethoven, Romance in F for violin, Brahms, Violin Sonata in G, Lalo, Intermezzo from Cello Concerto.
2. Bath Saloons, Torquay
26 January 1901: this was a two-part vocal concert, with occasional instrumental solos, given ‘in Aid of the Lansdowne House Officers Families’ Fund', by Margaret Henniker (soprano), Miss Margaret Vereker (alto), Mr J.P. Curran (tenor) and Mr Henry C.F. Castleman (bass), Miss Irene Penso (violin) and Miss Annie Parsons (piano), accompanied by Miss Annie Parsons and Mrs W.H. Mortimer.
The performance was actually postponed until 9 February 1901 due to the death of Queen Victoria. The programme provides a list of the patrons and of the principal performers,
