Description
A collection of posters, handbills and programmes relating to performances of Zarzuelas presented by Joseph Ortiz (1928-89) and given at various venues in New York between 1984 and 1985.
This material, held loosely in two boxes, forms part of the Joseph Ortiz archive, acquired by Trinity College of Music in 2001 from Michael Holden, the nephew of Joseph Ortiz.
Ortiz was of Spanish descent and for the last 11 years of his life worked in the Library of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was particularly interested in the history and performance of Zarzuelas (a Spanish form akin to the operetta and the Singspiel) and established links with Placido Domingo through the City Hall Opera Society.

7 December 1984, Carnegie Recital Hall, Manhattan: 'Viva la Zarzuela!', an evening of arias and duettos from the Spanish Zarzuelas, featuring Carmen Bejarano (soprano) and Mario Valdivielso (baritone), presented by the Asociacion pro Zarzuela en America Inc (poster with photographs).
23 July [no year]: pages for the programme of the Metropolitan Opera Spanish tour, including a programme for a concert given on Sunday 23 July [no year] by the 'Solistas de the Metropolitan Opera Orchester of New York', directed by Enrique Garcia Asensio. [Fuente de los Baños de Diana]. This material includes a biographical note (with photo) on Asensio and a note on the orchestral ensemble.

7 and 8 August 1985, Madison Square Gardens, New York City: Antologia de la Zarzuela, created and directed by José Tamayo with the special participation of Placido Domingo (with descriptive and biographical notes). The production also featured the Ballet Espanol Antologia, the Rondalla Lirica of Madrid and the Orchestra Camara Lirica of Madrid.

Collections Overview
The Jerwood Library supports Trinity's mission to prepare informed performers of the highest calibre.
