Collection Summary
Collection Title
Mr Moberly's String Orchestra (1892-95)
Unique Identifier
c.371.c. (1.)
Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for four annual concerts given by Mr Moberly’s String Orchestra between 1892 and 1895, held at Prince's Hall, Piccadilly (1892 and 1894) and St. James's Hall, London (1893 and 1895).
These were two-part concerts of predominantly nineteenth-century repertory, combining music for string orchestra – including some repertory arranged for that ensemble – with vocal and instrumental solos.
Each programme contains historical and analytical notes (with musical examples) and a list of the orchestral ensemble, conducted by E.H. Moberly. Additional performers are cited as listed below.
19 May 1892: Mrs Hutchinson and Mr Plunket Greene (vocal) and Miss Winifred Holiday (violin solo), accompanied by Henry Bird.
12 May 1893: Mrs Hutchinson (vocal) and Miss Mary Cardew (violin), accompanied by Sylvia Cardew and Henry Bird (with some brief handwritten annotations, including information regarding encores).
4 December 1894: Mrs Hutchinson and Miss Margaret Barter (vocal), accompanied by Henry Bird (with an extended note by J. de Zelinski on ‘Music in Russia’, reproduced from the American Music Review).
17 May 1895: in aid of the Royal Hospital for Diseases of the Chest, with Mr Albert Archdeacon (vocal) and Miss Katharine Ramsay (piano), accompanied by Howard Hadley.
