Description
The third of four boxes of material relating to the activity of Music at Oxford, including festival brochures for events entitled Handel in Oxford: A Celebration of the Anniversary of Handel's Glorious Week in Oxford in July 1733, given at various Oxford venues from 6-14 July 1985 (three copies), 5-13 July 1986, 3-12 July 1987 (two copies), 2-10 July 1988, 30 July-12 July 1989 and 30 June-11 July 1990.
Also, the Festival Brochure for Haydn in Oxford (a 200th anniversary celebration of Haydn's visit to Oxford in July 1791), given at the Sheldonian Theatre between 29 June and 9 July 1991 (three copies), with individual programme books for the performances on 6 and 8 July.
All brochures contain programmes with historical, descriptive and biographical notes, photographs, detailed lists of the performers and historical essays concerning the associations between Handel/Haydn and Oxford. Many are accompanied by promotional leaflets and/or tickets and there are individual handbills for the performances given on 2, 3/10 and 5-8 July 1988.
The Handel Festivals included performances at a range of Oxford venues, principally the Sheldonian Theatre, the Holywell Music Room and Nuneham Park.
The individual programmes for the Haydn Festival both contain words and historical, descriptive and biographical notes.
6 July: The Creation, given as a Haydn Bicentenary Gala Concert for the benefit of the Bodleian Library by the Choir and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Anne Dawson, John Aler and David Wilson-Johnson (vocal), conducted by Charles Mackerras.
8 July: Gala Concert, being a Concert recreating the programme given … on 8 July 1791 when Joseph Haydn came to Oxford to receive the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music.
