Description
A complete set of analytical programmes and wordbooks for the six performances given as the first Newcastle-upon-Tyne Musical Festival between 20 and 22 October 1909.

Each programme begins with a brief introductory statement regarding the establishment of the Festival, a list of the committee members and guarantors for the event, and a list of the orchestral and choral ensembles, the former being the London Symphony Orchestra, led by A. W. Payne. All programmes provide the following information regarding the additional musicians engaged.

Vocal: Agnes Nicholls, Miss Esta D’Argo, Edith Evans, Clara Butt, Phyllis Lett, Maria Yelland, John Coates, Henry Brearley, Walter Hyde, Frederic Austin, Herbert Brown and Kennerley Rumford.

Instrumental: Signor Busoni and Egon Petri (piano) and J. E. Jeffries (organ).

Henry Coward (chorus master) and Thomas Wilkinson (chorus accompanist).

Wassili Safonoff and Henry Coward (conductors).

The following composers are listed as being engaged to conductor their own works: Edward Elgar, Granville Bantock, Signor Busoni, Rutland Boughton and Adam von Ahn Carse.


20 October 1909 (morning)
Mendelssohn, Elijah, conducted by Henry Coward with J. E. Jeffries (organ). This document includes a historical introduction by Joseph Bennett and a wordbook.

20 October (evening)
A choral-orchestral concert, conducted by Wassili Safonoff with Signor Busoni (piano) and Messrs Henry Brearley and Kennerley Rumford (vocal). This included a performance of Edgar L. Bainton, Overture Phantasy, ‘Prometheus’ (composed for the Festival) and the first English performance of Rimsky-Korsakov, Cantata, ‘Ballad of the Doom of Oleg’, op. 58. The programme includes historical and analytical notes, with musical examples and the text for vocal pieces, by F. Gilbert Webb, ‘C.F.L’, and Rosa Newmarch.

21 October (morning)
A concert of music by Elgar, comprising The Kingdom and the Symphony in A flat, op. 55, conducted by the composer and featuring the vocal soloists Agnes Nicholls, Phyllis Lett, John Coates and Herbert Brown. There are historical and analytical notes, with musical examples, on both works, by A. J. Jaeger and Rosa Newmarch respectively.

21 October (evening)
A two-part orchestral concert, conducted by Wassili Safonoff, with vocal solos (Elgar, Sea Pictures) performed by Clara Butt. Also, the first performance of Rutland Boughton, Symphonic Poem for Chorus and Orchestra, ‘The Invincible Armada’, op. 12 (conducted by the composer) and the first English performance of H. Hadley, Tone Poem ‘Salome’. The programme includes historical and analytical notes, with musical examples and texts, by Rosa Newmarch, F. Gilbert Webb and Herbert Thompson.

22 October (morning)
The first English performance of Haydn, Oratorio, ‘The Return of Tobias’, performed in commemoration of the centenary of the composer’s death, by Miss Esta D’Argo, Mr Walter Hyde, Mr Herbert Brown, Miss Maria Yelland and Miss Edith Evans, conducted by Henry Coward. Also, the first English performance of Busoni, Concerto for Piano, Orchestra and Male Chorus, op. 39, given by Egon Petri (piano) and conducted by the composer. The wordbook for the Haydn oratorio is prefaced by historical notes by Joseph Bennett and ‘C.F.L.’ There are historical and analytical notes on the Busoni, with musical examples, by Egon Petri.

22 October (evening)
A choral-orchestral concert, including the first public performance of Adam von Ahn Carse, Symphony in G minor, conducted by the composer. Also, Granville Bantock, Cantata ‘Omar Khayyám’, conducted by the composer and featuring vocalists Phyllis Lett, John Coates, Frederic Austin. There are historical and analytical notes on the symphony by F. Gilbert Webb (with musical examples). The wordbook for the cantata also includes notes by Ernest Newman.
