Collection Summary

Collection Title
Oxford Ladies' Musical Society (1898-1911)
Unique Identifier
MS.Top.Oxon.e.473-474
Description
A complete set of programmes for the first 157 concerts given by the Oxford Ladies' Musical Society between February 1898 and March 1911, arranged chronologically and pasted into two volumes.

Interfiled with the programmes are the prospecutses for these concerts (published termly, missing that for Michaelmas 1902) and individual programmes for a Concert for Children given in the Assembly Room of the Town Hall on 13 December 1899 and an Afternoon Concert given on 5 March 1908.

For the most part, documentation consists of handbills/single-sheet programmes: those concerts for which words are provided are marked *. The programme for the Concert for Children (13 December 1899) includes words and lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles.

The prospectuses are published termly and include programmes for three or four performances. Where the proposed dates given in the prospectus differ from the dates given on the individual programmes, the latter is listed below.

The individual handbills do not make reference to the performance venue but the prospectuses claim that, with the exception of the concerts given in Hilary Term 1899 (at St. George's Hall), concerts took place at 115, High Street.

These were concerts of solo or small-scale (chamber) vocal and instrumental repertory.
