Description
A bound volume of prospectuses and handbills for the Meetings and Concerts given under the auspices of the Oxford University Musical Club and Union, between 1916 and 1923, bound chronologically. Also, a miscellaneous selection of (largely undated) handbills for performances given at the Town Hall and Holywell Music Room, Oxford, including items from 1960 and 1961.
Unless otherwise stated below, all concerts were given in the Holywell Music Room. They were principally chamber music performances with instrumental and some vocal solos. The Meetings were given largely by professional performers whilst the concerts featured members of the society.
1. Meetings
Handbills for meeting nos. 1036-1167, missing those for nos. 1055, 1081-83, 1130, 1133, 1140 and 1154. Prospectuses are held for each term (Michaelmas, Hilary and Easter/Trinity) from Michaelmas 1916 to Michaelmas 1923, missing those for Michaelmas 1919 and Trinity 1922. Where prospectuses can be used to ascertain dates for the meetings for which handbills are missing, these are provided in square brackets below.
From 7 May 1918 to 28 January 1919, the meetings were held at Taphouse's Music Room whilst those on 8 June 1920 and 11 May 1922 took place at the Town Hall, the latter to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Club. The remaining performances took place at the Holywell Music Room.
