Collection Summary
Collection Title
Oxford University Musical Club and Union: Ensemble Class (1919-49)
Unique Identifier
Dep.d.571-72
Description
A handwritten register of the weekly programmes given by the Ensemble Class of the Oxford University Musical Club and Union between Michaelmas Term 1919 and Hilary Term 1949, held as two bound volumes.
The material is divided into volumes as follows: Michaelmas Term 1919 to Trinity Term 1932; and Michaelmas Term 1932 to Hilary Term 1949. A stray programme from Trinity Term 1932 (2 June) is held as the first item in volume 2.
The listing in volume 1 would appear to be largely complete, although there is no material for Trinity Term 1925. Volume 2 is lacking material for the period from May 1933 to April 1936 and a note is provided stating that the activity of the Club was suspended between October 1939 and October 1947 because of the war.
None of the programmes provide any definite indication of the location of the performances, but this is likely to have been that Club's own rooms in Holywell Street [Holywell Music Room].
Programmes provide detailed information about the performers involved, including lists of any larger instrumental ensembles. During the earliest years, the events were directed by Frank Bridge. Thereafter, records of the director become less consistent, but Bridge would appear to have been succeeded by Ernest Tomlinson (Michaelmas Term 1924) and then by André Mangeot (Trinity Term 1933).
Accompanying these volumes (held as Dep.d.570) is the minute book for the OUMC & U Ensemble Class Committee.
