Description
A handwritten record of the Member's Concerts of the Oxford University Musical Club and Union, given between February 1931 and June 1939 (nos. 934-983) and November 1947 and May 1949 (nos. 984-1003), held in a single volume.
Also, a handwritten programme for the Member's Concert given at the Oxford and Cambridge Musical Club, Bedford Square on 11 June 1931.
These were concerts of vocal and instrumental solos, with some small-scale chamber music. There are detailed records of the performers engaged, including, where appropriate, lists of the instrumental/orchestral ensemble.
For the most part, the programmes provide no record of the place of performance, although this was likely to have been the Club's own rooms in Holywell Street. The concert on 1 May 1948 was given at 5.30am on Magdalen Bridge, 'prior to the May morning singing from Magdalen Tower'.
The numbering system employed in this volume refers only to the 'recorded concerts', rather than to the original sequence of performances. As a result, its continuity is not indicative of a complete set of programmes. In fact, the sequence breaks off between February 1933 and May 1936 (between nos. 966 and 967) and between June 1936 and January 1938 (between nos. 970-71). The club was disbanded during the war years, ie. From October 1939 to Michaelmas Term 1947.
The sequence is also missing the programme for no. 962 and concert nos. 956 and 957 were both given on 15 October 1932.
