Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for seven concerts given at the Queen’s Hall, Langham Place between 1905 and 1907, held as part of a tracted volume.
26 January and 8 March 1905: London Symphony Orchestra nos. 4 and 6, led by Mr Arthur W. Payne and conducted by Charles V. Stanford (January) and Edward Elgar (March) (with wordbooks, historical and analytical notes, including musical examples, by Edgar F. Jacques and F. Gilbert Webb, lists of the orchestral ensemble and numerous advertisements). The concert in January consisted principally of music by Stanford, including a symphony and the first performance of Five Songs of the Sea, sung by Mr Plunket Greene: this performance also featured Saint-Seans, Symphony Poem ‘‘Phaëton’, Brahms, Piano concerto in B flat (Mr Leonard Borwick, piano) and Parry, Symphonic Variations. The concert in March was an all-Elgar programme, including the Enigma Variations and first performances of both the Pomp and Circumstance March in C minor Op. 39/3 and Introduction and Allegro for String Orchestra.
21 March 1905: Charles Williams’s Orchestral Concerts no. 3, given by the London Symphony Orchestra, with Mischa Elman (violin), conducted by Mr Charles Williams, including violin concertos by Tchaikovsky and Beethoven, Brahms, Tragic Overture, and Parry, Symphony in F minor (with historical and analytical notes, including musical examples, by Edgar F. Jacques and F. Gilbert Webb and a list of the orchestral ensemble).
26 June 1906: Vienna Philharmonic Society no.1, conducted by Franz Schalk, including overtures by Wagner (Meistersinger) and Weber (Oberon), symphonies by Mozart (No. 40 in G minor) and Beethoven (No. 5 in C minor) and Elgar, Enigma Variations (with historical and analytical notes, including musical examples, by Percy Pitt and Alfred Kalish and photographs of the principal performers).
17 October [1907]: Queen’s Hall Orchestra with Richard Buhlig (piano), conducted by Henry J. Wood, including concertos for piano by Schumann and Liszt, concertante music by Frank and Liszt/Busoni and an overture by Mozart (with analytical notes by Percy Pitt and Alfred Kalisch)
12 November [1907]: Queen’s Hall Orchestra, with Mr H. Vivan Hamilton (piano) and Mrs George Swinton, conducted by Herr Emil von Reznicek, including the first performances of Vaughan Williams, Two Orchestral Impressions, Ethel Smyth, Three Songs for Contralto, and Flute, Harp, String Trio, Triangle and Tambourine (Mrs George Swinton) and Vivian Hamilton (Suite de Ballet) (with wordbook and historical and analytical notes).
5 March 1907: Blackpool Glee and Madrigal Society, with Mr Gervase Elwes and Miss Clara Butterworth (vocal), accompanied by Mr Frederick B. Kiddle, Mr. A. Vivian Jackson and Mrs W.G. McNaught, conducted by Herbert Whittaker (with wordbook and a list of the choral performers).
