A miscellaneous collection of programmes and handbills for performances involving the violinist André Mangeot, including a largely complete set of programme cards for the 73rd to 89th meetings of The Music Society, given at St. John’s Institute, Westminster between October 1932 and March 1935 (missing no. 85), arranged chronologically in a single scrapbook and held in the last of five boxes comprising the collection of André Mangeot.

The programmes are accompanied by prospectuses, handwritten and printed correspondence and press cuttings. Many carry handwritten annotations and signatures.

1. Music Society Concerts
The Music Society was established by Mangeot in 1920 for the performance of chamber music. The concerts include a number of works being given for the first time in England.

13th season (1932–33)
11 October, 8 November and 20 December 1932 and 10 January, 14 February and 14 March 1933: meeting nos. 73-78.
The concert on 11 October 1932 included the first public performance of Helen Perkin, Pastoral Movement and that on 14 March 1933 included the first English performance of Serge Prokofieff, Sonata for violin, op. 56.

14th season (1933–34, nos. 79-84)
31 October, 21 November and 12 December 1933 and 23 January, 20 February and 20 March 1934: meeting nos. 79-84.
The concert on 20 February included ‘probably the first English performance of A. Mossclow, String Quartet no. 1, op. 24.

15th season (1934–35, nos. 86-89)
20 November 1934 and 15 January, 19 February and 19 March 1935: meeting nos.86-89.
The concert on 20 November 1934 included the first English performances of Henry Martelli, Quartet for Strings, op. 33


2. Miscellaneous concerts
A miscellaneous selection of handbills and programmes for performances given by the Music Society String Quartet (1925–26) and the International String Quartet (1932). Also, a handbill for a vocal recital given by John Goss on 10 June 1931 at the Wigmore Hall.

The Centre for Performance History was created in 2004 through the amalgamation of the Department of Portraits and the Museum of Instruments (see the separate entry for the Museum. The College has acquired portraits throughout its history since 1883 and the Centre posseses the most comprehensive collection of portraits of musicians in the UK, amounting to some 346 original portraits and 10,000 prints and photographs. In addition to the iconographical collections and their documentation, the department houses other categories of source material - most notably the largest collection of concert programmes in this country, comprising some 600,000 items dating from 1780 to the present day.
