Description
A collection of programmes for performances given at the Queen’s Hall, London in 1901, under the direction and management of Robert Newman, held with a programme for a Boosey and Hawkes Ballad Concert given on 9 March 1901.
Unless otherwise stated, all concerts were given by the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, led by Arthur W. Payne, accompanied by Percy Pitt and conducted by Henry Wood.
All programmes include a list of the board members at the Queen’s Hall, contain a large number of advertisements for other related performances and provide historical and analytical notes by Edgar F. Jacques. Those for 4 and 8 June 1901 include musical examples and provide a complete list of the orchestral ensemble.
3 February 1901: In Memoriam, presented by the Sunday Concert Society and featuring Miss Hilda Wilson (voice), including Beethoven, Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’ (with words and a historical essay entitled ‘Musical Development during the Victorian Era’).
17 February 1901: Sunday Afternoon Concert, with Mr Joseph O’Mara (vocal) and Mr Alfred H. West (piano), including the first performance of Bourgault-Ducoudray, Suite of Greek Dances: Le Carnaval d’Athènes (with wordbook).
23 February 1901: piano recital of music by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt, given by Ferruccio Busoni.
4 June 1901: Wagner Concert, featuring Mademoiselle de La Rouviere (making her first performance in England) (with wordbook).
8 June 1901: Verdi Memorial Concert, with Madame Sobrino, Signor Anselmi, Miss Marie Brema and Monsieur Plançon, conducted by Signor Mancinelli, including Verdi, Requiem, preceded by Beethoven, Overture ‘Egmont’ and the first performance of A.C. Mackenzie, Dramatic Suite, ‘Coriolanus’ (conducted by the composer).
9 March 1901: Eighth London Ballad Concert, under the direction of Messrs Boosey and Co., including a performance of Liza Lehmann’s New Song Cycle, The Daisy-Chain, accompanied by the composer (with wordbook and handwritten annotations indicating the performance of encores). The programme lists the following vocal soloists: Miss Elsie Horne, Mr Spencer Dyke, Miss Julia Franks, Mr Plunket Greene, Madame Lillian Blauvelt, Mr H. Lane Wilson, Miss Ada Crossley, Miss Dale, Mr Gregory Hast and Mr Denis O’Sullivan, with Mr Samuel Liddle and Mr F.A. Sewell (accompanists).
