Collection Summary

Collection Title
English Provinces: Glyndebourne (1934-2003)
Description
A collection of nine boxes of programme from Glyndebourne, from 1934 to 2003. The collection includes press cuttings, fliers, leaflets, tickets and newsletters.

The majority of items in the collection are festival programme books from the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. The collection includes books from the following years: 1934-1936, 1939, 1952-1999, 2002-2003. The early books are much slimmer and smaller than their later counterparts; the official programme books were launched in 1952. The collection includes material from the first festival, in 1934. In addition to festival programme books, there are also a number of individual opera programmes (from the 1930s), fliers and booking forms (largely from the 1990s). The collection includes a number of items from associated events, such as lectures and exhibitions.

The collection includes items from performances and events given outside of the main opera festival. These include concert programmes – for instance programmes from concerts given by the London Mozart Players in 1959 and 1961 – and courses. In addition, there are a small number of items from local events which used the performing space of Glyndebourne: for instance, recitals given as part of the Brighton Festival in 1989.

Collections Overview
The Centre for Performance History was created in 2004 through the amalgamation of the Department of Portraits and the Museum of Instruments (see the separate entry for the Museum. The College has acquired portraits throughout its history since 1883 and the Centre posseses the most comprehensive collection of portraits of musicians in the UK, amounting to some 346 original portraits and 10,000 prints and photographs. In addition to the iconographical collections and their documentation, the department houses other categories of source material - most notably the largest collection of concert programmes in this country, comprising some 600,000 items dating from 1780 to the present day.
