Description
A collection of 61 programmes from the the New Theatre, Oxford, from 1909 to 1981. The majority of programmes in the collection are from the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s and 1970s. The collection includes a few press cuttings.
The collection mainly includes programmes from plays and operas. The collection includes the programme from the first staged performance of Irmelin (Delius), written in the 1890s but first performed in 1953. However, there are programmes from ballet performances and one programme from a concert (2 copies) - a concert given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1937, and conducted by Toscanini.
The collection starts with a number of programmes from plays, performed by the City of Oxford Amateur Dramatic Club (COAD) or the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS). From 1927, the collection includes a number of performances given by the Oxford University Opera Club. From the 1960s onwards, the collection is largely from visiting companies, including a number of programmes from Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Touring Opera and Sadler's Wells Opera.

Collections Overview
The Centre for Performance History was created in 2004 through the amalgamation of the Department of Portraits and the Museum of Instruments (see the separate entry for the Museum. The College has acquired portraits throughout its history since 1883 and the Centre posseses the most comprehensive collection of portraits of musicians in the UK, amounting to some 346 original portraits and 10,000 prints and photographs. In addition to the iconographical collections and their documentation, the department houses other categories of source material - most notably the largest collection of concert programmes in this country, comprising some 600,000 items dating from 1780 to the present day.
